Naturescaping with Beth Young & Be Natural Music School of Santa Cruz
Saturday May 11, 2013
Saturday May 11, 2013
Ruth Copland talks to Beth Young of Beth Young Garden Design about how to be environmentally conscious with our gardening whilst creating beautiful spaces for ourselves. Beth has a great book out called The Naturescaping Workbook: A Step-by-Step Guide for Bringing Nature to Your Backyard (Timber Press, 2011) which teaches the homeowner how to create a very satisfying home landscape by working with nature's awesome powers, eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and excessive watering. Much of modern garden design is about controlling nature to achieve a desired effect. But for the eco-conscious homeowner, the best garden designer is Mother Nature, and following her lead can result in a beautiful low-maintenance landscape that requires fewer resources, attracts natural wildlife, and saves time and money. http://bygardendesign.com/ In the second hour Ruth Copland talks to Matt Pinck of the Be Natural Music School of Santa Cruz and also interviews teen bands from the school. As well as learning an instrument, students have the option to join a band and experience what it means to work with other musicians. On the show are Slime (10-11 year olds) with band member SXaltokan "X-Man" Granados on vocals and keyboard in the studio; 3-Hole Punch (12-13 year olds) with band members Isabella Edge and JP Thrasher on lead guitar in the studio; and Walkaway Raven (12-16 year olds) with band members Morgaine White on vocals and acoustic guitar and Hannah Manabe on lead guitar in the studio. Be Natural Music School has a benefit to fund scholarships on April 16th at Don Quixote's in Felton. 3-Hole Punch Walkaway Raven Slime: http://benaturalmusicsantacruz.com/

Jonathan Dana & life-affirming power of film; Songwriters Showcase.
Saturday Apr 06, 2013
Saturday Apr 06, 2013
On location in Hollywood, Ruth Copland talks to renowned Hollywood independent film producer Jonathan Dana about his 40+ year career, the creative power of film to change the world and the inspiring films that he has been involved with. These include Oscar-nominated The Invisible War (directed by Kirby Dick and produced by Amy Ziering) about sexual assault in the US military, and We Were Here (a film by David Weissman and Bill Weber) about the genesis of the AIDS epidemic in the Castro in San Francisco. We talk about how the disturbing revelations of The Invisible War have had a tremendously positive effect in stimulating debate and action in Washington DC to address this previously 'invisible' shocking state of affairs, and how We Were Here shows the personal and community issues raised by AIDS and the incredibly compassionate response of the Castro community that inspired 'The San Francisco Model', which modelled for the country the way to deal with AIDS compassionately. Ruth Copland and Jonathan Dana also chat about the state of the independent film business and the role of women in film amongst many other interesting subjects. Hour 2 continues with Ruth Copland interviewing the latest round of finalists in the Santa Cruz Songwriters Showcase. The organisers of the Showcase, Ken and Barbara Capitanich, are in the studio along with finalists Claire Tromblee, Josh Lowe, and August Bullock performing live.
