The Great Buffalo Episode with Buffalo Field Campaign and Musician Steve Graves

We talk about the great buffalo of the Northern Plains with buffalo rights advocate Dan Brister,  Executive Director of The Buffalo Field Campaign. BFC is the only group working in the field, everyday, to stop the slaughter and harassment of Yellowstone's wild buffalo. Volunteers from around the world defend buffalo on their traditional winter habitat and advocate for their protection. Our daily patrols stand with the buffalo on the ground they choose to be on, and document every move made against them. The State of Hawaiian Monk Seals and California Mountain Lions with Dr. Terrie Williams

Dr. Terrie Williams is a professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California Santa Cruz.  She runs The Mammalian Physiology Lab at UCSC which focuses on comparative physiology.  She is an Animal Physiologist for the Santa Cruz Puma Project (santacruzpumas.org). She is also the author of The Odyssey of KP2, the story of a two-day old abandoned monk seal pup, as he embarks on an odyssey to save his species from extinction (http://www.savemonkseals.ucsc.edu).  We talk to Dr. Williams about the state of the Hawaiian Monk Seals and the Santa Cruz Pumas.

Alternative Energy Talks with Melissa Ceresa and Ray Newkirk

The ATTE initiative is set up to transform California's workforce by providing on-demand training that is accessible, flexible and relevant in today's economy. With a focus on transportation and energy. The ATTE provides training to help businesses and workers meet the challenge of newly emerging transportation and energy technologies.

We talked to Joel Postmam about social media. Postman is the author of SocialCorp: Social Media Goes Corporate, a handbook designed to help corporate communicators and executives understand how to successfully adopt social business strategies in large companies. Joel is the principal of Socialized, a consultancy that helps companies take advantage of social media in corporate communications, public relations and marketing. Prior to founding Socialized, Joel was EVP of Emerging Media at Eastwick Communications, where he led the agency's social media practices and helped companies like Fujitsu, StrongMail, and Seagate Technology adopt social media initiatives. Joel is a 20-year corporate communications veteran. He worked for five years at Sun Microsystems, where he as a senior manager of executive communications and speechwriter to then-CEO and chairman, Scott McNealy. After Sun, Joel joined Hewlett Packard. He is presently Senior Manager, Executive Communications, for Brocade.

Dr. James Freeman and Annapurna Pandey film-makers of The Myth of the Buddha's Birthplace

We talk to anthropologists Dr. James M. Freeman and Dr. Annapurna Devi Pandey as they investigate a controversial claim about the true origin of the Buddha and their film ‘The Myth of the Buddha’s Birthplace."  Returning to Kapileswar, a small village in the state of Odisha, eastern India that Freeman first visited in 1962, Freeman and Pandey search for an ancient stone inscription, which was discovered in Kapileswar nearly a century ago but has since mysteriously vanished. This stone inscription, so it is said, proclaims Kapileswar to be the birthplace of the Buddha. This claim runs counter to all established theories, since Nepal is generally accepted to be the birthplace of the Buddha.    In searching for the lost inscription, Freeman and Pandey make an unexpected and significant discovery. The villagers of Kapileswar have created a new myth about the Buddha’s birth and a new ritual based on this myth. ‘The Myth of the Buddha’s Birthplace’ shows how a modern myth has been created and answers the questions of the authenticity of the Kapileswar stone inscription and the credibility of the Kapileswar birthplace claim.

Filmmakers Jazzelle and Tess Sweet featured at Santa Cruz Film Festival
